Portable carpet cleaners are one of those things nobody thinks much about until coffee hits the couch, something questionable happens on the rug, or the car seat suddenly looks disgusting in daylight.
My pick is the Bissell Little Green 1400B. For most homes, I think it is the smarter buy: a straightforward spray, scrub and extract machine with a 48-ounce clean-water tank and a 15-foot cord. It is made for carpet, upholstery, stairs and car interiors.
The Shark StainStriker PX201 uses two cleaning solutions that mix inside the machine, with no manual premixing required. Its stain-and-odor focus gives me a reason to look harder at it if pet accidents are the main problem.
I’m not going to tell you I personally poured matching glasses of red wine onto two pieces of carpet for this article. I didn’t. This recommendation is based on the manufacturers’ published specifications and which features I think matter most in an actual house.

Why the Little Green gets my vote
Here is what I want from a portable carpet cleaner: I want to pull it out, clean the nasty thing, put it away and get on with my life.
I do not need extra decisions every time somebody drops spaghetti on the couch.
That is where the Bissell wins this one for me. Both machines need the right cleaning solution and a rinse after use, but I like the Little Green’s straightforward setup and longer power cord when I’m choosing a machine for everyday jobs.
The Shark StainStriker is not a bad choice. If you need an upholstery cleaner for recurring pet stains, its cleaning system deserves a look. That doesn’t mean I can promise it will remove an old stain the Bissell can’t.
For a spot cleaner that can move from furniture to stairs to car upholstery, though, I would spend my money on the Little Green. It covers the boring everyday stuff I actually care about.
My final answer: Bissell Little Green for most people. Shark StainStriker if pets are regularly committing crimes against your furniture.
