BLACK+DECKER Pivot Vac for everyday utility. Shark WANDVAC if being extremely lightweight is the reason you’ll use it.

A cordless handheld vacuum has one job: be easy enough to grab that I use it before the crumbs spread throughout the entire house.

My pick is the BLACK+DECKER Pivot Vac BDH2000PL. It is bigger than the Shark, at about 3 pounds, but gives you a 466 mL dust bowl, a nozzle that pivots up to 200 degrees and a published runtime of about 10 minutes.

The Shark WANDVAC WV201 absolutely nails the “easy to grab” part. It weighs about 1.4 pounds, sits on a charging dock and has a high-speed brushless motor in a ridiculously slim body.

The Shark is lighter. It is prettier. It is the one I would want sitting on a kitchen counter without looking like I left the vacuum cleaner out.

But if I’m buying a handheld vacuum for the car, couch, stairs, cereal and whatever has collected beside the refrigerator, I want the bigger dust cup and that pivoting nozzle. BLACK+DECKER gets my money.

Why BLACK+DECKER gets my vote

There is a point where “compact” becomes “now I have to empty the thing again.”

That is my issue with tiny hand vacuums.

The WANDVAC makes perfect sense if your usual emergency is coffee grounds, countertop crumbs or something small in the passenger seat. At 1.4 pounds, it is easy to see why somebody would choose it for quick, one-handed cleanup.

For a car vacuum or a small vacuum for furniture, I usually want more room for the mess. I don’t want to empty the cup after six Cheerios and a bad decision.

The Pivot Vac is still small enough to keep nearby, but its bigger bowl and adjustable nozzle make more sense to me for those jobs. Neither of these is my promise of effortless deep pet-hair removal from every fabric; this comparison is about convenient spot cleanup.

My final answer: BLACK+DECKER Pivot Vac for most people. Shark WANDVAC if being extremely lightweight is the reason you’ll actually use it.
