Which membership earns its renewal?
Choose Amazon Prime (paid/affiliate link) if the household’s biggest value comes from frequent shipping plus digital extras. Choose Costco Gold Star if warehouse shopping, gas and Costco-specific inventory are the point. Choose Sam’s Club Club if the lower base fee, Scan & Go and Sam’s-specific convenience fit your routine better. Upgrade to Costco Executive or Sam’s Plus only when the extra rewards and perks have a realistic chance of paying back the higher fee.
The dumbest membership is not the most expensive one. It is the one you renew because you “might use it” while driving past the building for eleven months.

What it costs just to get in

These are not equivalent bundles. Prime includes major digital services and shipping; Costco and Sam’s are warehouse memberships. This chart shows the fee, not who magically saves you the most money.
The pantry is not a storage unit for good intentions
This comparison is basically a personality test disguised as a receipt. Prime is for the person who realizes at 9:47 p.m. that the dog needs shampoo, the printer needs ink and somebody used the last phone charger. Costco is for the person who sees a 40-pack and feels spiritually secure. Sam’s Club is for the person who wants warehouse pricing but would also like to scan the cart and get the hell out.
None of that means any membership saves money automatically. Buying a twelve-month supply of snacks your family stops liking on Tuesday is not bulk savings. It is a pantry hostage situation.
When Amazon Prime earns its keep
Prime’s annual fee is higher, but the bundle is wider. Amazon currently advertises fast delivery, Prime Video with limited ads, Music Prime, exclusive deals and more. Prime also includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage through Amazon Photos for members, plus Prime Reading. The value is strongest when you already use several of those benefits instead of mentally assigning the entire $139 to shipping.
When Costco makes more sense
Costco Gold Star is $65 per year and includes one Household Card. Executive costs $130 and adds a 2% annual Reward on qualified purchases, up to $1,250, plus additional Executive benefits. The math on Executive is not mystical: the extra $65 needs enough qualifying spending to justify itself. If you do not spend like an Executive household, the fancy card is just a more expensive rectangle.
When Sam’s Club makes more sense
Sam’s Club lists Club at $60 and Plus at $120. Club includes Instant Savings, member fuel prices, Scan & Go, two membership cards and curbside pickup rules. Plus adds 2% Sam’s Cash on qualifying purchases up to $750 per year, free shipping and delivery on eligible orders over $50, early shopping hours and other perks. If Scan & Go saves your sanity every week, that is real value even though spreadsheets refuse to measure rage avoided in checkout lines.
Is Costco Executive worth the extra membership fee?
The upgrade from $65 Gold Star to $130 Executive costs an extra $65. At 2% back, $3,250 in qualifying annual purchases earns that difference back before considering other benefits. That is qualifying spending, not every dollar on your receipt. Buying things you never needed to reach the target is expensive participation.
Can Prime replace a Costco or Sam’s Club membership?
Sometimes, but these are different shopping habits. Compare the delivered unit price of items you actually buy, the drive to the club, storage space, and digital benefits you use. A household can justify both, but each membership needs its own reason to stay.

Prime wins when delivery and digital perks are part of daily life. Costco wins when you genuinely shop Costco. Sam’s wins when its clubs, fuel and Scan & Go fit your routine. The membership card is not a coupon fairy. If you have to invent reasons to use it, cancel the damn thing.
