The shopping list is more practical than the advertising

Honey’s take: Everyday restocks and early holiday gifts deserve attention before a mystery gadget with a dramatic countdown. The current shopper survey points to essentials, with clothing, toys and home goods leading planned gift purchases. Electronics still belong on a considered wish list, but the evidence does not say everybody is buying a new television.

Amazon’s October event is officially Prime Big Deal Days, October 6–7, 2026. “What people plan to buy” is a different question from “what Amazon is discounting.” The table keeps those separate: survey-supported categories first, then an HBH watchlist. None of this is a claim about final 2026 bestsellers.

20 categories to check before the cart gets ideas

This expanded list combines survey-backed categories with Amazon’s announced sale categories and HBH’s own watchlist. It is not a ranking of what people will buy. Linked HBH guides compare products or related accessories; their older prices and availability need a fresh check before checkout.

The dollar caps are HBH budgeting examples, not observed prices, recommended mandatory spending or predicted discounts. Use your own budget. Only the Fire TV offer is an announced product price, and its terms and availability still need checking.

On a phone, swipe the comparison chart sideways to see every column.

The shopping links above say “Browse” because they open Amazon search results for each category, rather than one selected product. They are affiliate links; see the disclosure below.

You opened the app for detergent

Picture it: one sensible household refill. Ten minutes later, the cart contains a countertop appliance, three velvet pumpkins and a gadget whose purpose is apparently “looks satisfying in a video.” The detergent is still out of stock.

That is why the list happens before the sale. Write down what you need, who the gifts are for, the exact version you want and the most you will spend. A countdown timer is not a financial adviser. It is a very enthusiastic clock.

What shoppers actually told researchers

Numerator’s September 30 preview says nearly two-thirds of U.S. consumers are considering the event. More than half see it as an important holiday-shopping occasion, and apparel, toys and home goods lead intended gift purchases. Higher-income households show particular interest in restocking regular purchases and private-label products.

The release draws on surveys of more than 3,000 consumers fielded September 18–19 and June 8–9, 2026. These are intentions, not completed transactions. Its separate 2025 purchase data named everyday products such as dish spray and cleaning wipes among bestsellers; that historical result is context, not a prediction of the 2026 winners.

Restocks can be the least exciting and most useful purchase

For products you already use, compare unit cost against your normal store and normal pack size. A smaller bottle inside a bigger-looking package does not become a bargain because the label is yelling.

Example math, not a live offer: a $24 pack containing 120 usable units costs 20 cents per unit. A $15 pack containing 60 costs 25 cents per unit. The cheaper checkout total is not the cheaper unit price. But buying more than you can use still wastes money, even when the division looks impressive.

Holiday gifts need a recipient, not just a discount

For toys, record the exact set or model requested. For clothes, check size and return conditions. For home goods, measure the space first. A deeply discounted object that does not fit anyone, anywhere, is just a storage problem wearing a bow.

Pick gifts from actual conversations: a child’s wish list, a worn-out item someone mentioned, a hobby they already enjoy. Buying a person an entirely new personality because it was 40% off is a bold move.

Tech and beauty: separate the deal from the temptation

Amazon’s event announcement includes electronics and beauty among its promotional categories. That tells us what will be marketed, not which categories shoppers will ultimately buy most. For tech, match the generation and features before comparing prices. Read our Roku vs Fire TV comparison or the new Fire TV and Cube comparison before choosing a streaming device.

For beauty, start with products you already know you want and compare the package size and seller. A ten-step routine is not inherently better value than replacing the one empty bottle on your counter. The sale should support your routine, not assign you homework.

Go deeper before you buy

Fourteen more focused shopping areas, with existing HBH comparisons wherever there is a relevant fit. For gaming systems and computers, the links below are clearly marked as related accessories because we do not yet have a published console or laptop comparison.

Holiday decorations: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Halloween yard decor, Christmas lights, wreaths and seasonal table pieces. Measure the actual spot before adopting an inflatable taller than your garage. Check where lights can be used and whether power cords, timers or batteries are included; indoor smart plugs are not a substitute for outdoor-rated equipment.

Compare with HBH: Related: compare smart plugs for compatible indoor lights; Related: compare AA batteries for compatible decorations.

TVs: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Living-room 4K screens, bedroom sets and gaming-ready displays. A screen’s size is only the opening question. Compare the actual model number, picture features and connections; a projector is a different room-and-lighting decision, not simply a television with more inches.

Compare with HBH: Compare three 55-inch Fire TVs; Alternative: compare NEBULA projectors.

Shop tvs on Amazon (paid link)

Gaming systems: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Consoles, handheld systems, controllers and game bundles. Start with the games the player actually wants, then check which system runs them. Price the complete setup, including extra controllers and any required subscriptions. Our lighting guide covers a gaming-room accessory, not a console comparison.

Compare with HBH: Related: compare Govee gaming-room lights.

Computers: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Everyday laptops, desktops and work-from-home machines. Write down the software and tasks first, then match the exact configuration. Two machines with similar names can have different memory and storage. Our monitor and hub guides cover accessories; they do not compare laptop processors.

Compare with HBH: Related: compare ASUS portable monitors; Related: compare Anker USB-C hubs.

Kitchen appliances: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Air fryers, kettles, ice makers and countertop helpers. Buy for the meal or chore you repeat, not the fantasy kitchen where everyone suddenly enjoys washing accessories. Check the footprint and usable capacity before deciding a bigger number makes a better appliance.

Compare with HBH: Compare Ninja and COSORI air fryers; Compare Frigidaire and EUHOMY ice makers; Compare three electric kettles.

Coffee and espresso: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Pod brewers, ground-coffee machines and espresso setups. The machine should fit your morning patience level. Compare pod costs, milk cleanup and whether a grinder is separate. There is no discount large enough to make a complicated ritual convenient when you are already late.

Compare with HBH: Compare Bambino, Bambino Plus and Barista Express; Compare Ninja pod brewers and Keurig.

Headphones and earbuds: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Over-ear travel headphones and pocket-size earbuds. Choose the wearing style before the sale price. A headphone bargain you cannot tolerate for half an hour is a fancy drawer resident. Read the return terms and compare the connections you actually use.

Compare with HBH: Compare Sony, Bose and Sennheiser headphones; Compare three JBL earbuds.

Soundbars and speakers: what belongs on the list?

Look for: TV soundbars, portable speakers and Alexa speakers. Better TV dialogue, patio music and voice control are different jobs. Pick the job first. Check whether a soundbar needs space for separate rear speakers or a subwoofer before inviting the whole setup into the room.

Compare with HBH: Compare JBL soundbars; Compare JBL and Bose portable speakers; Compare Echo Studio, Dot Max and Dot.

Tablets: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Family tablets, portable entertainment and casual reading screens. Start with the apps the person needs. Compare the exact memory and storage configuration, then add the case or keyboard cost if it is part of the plan. A special design does not automatically mean upgraded hardware.

Compare with HBH: Compare Fire HD 10, Fire HD 8 and Harry Potter edition.

E-readers and books: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Kindles, reading subscriptions and book gifts. A reading device and a reading subscription are separate purchases. Match the screen and controls to the reader, then check whether a subscription includes the books they want instead of paying for a very large maybe.

Compare with HBH: Compare Kindle, Paperwhite and Signature; Compare Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading and Audible.

Smart-home security: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Doorbells, indoor cameras, outdoor cameras and locks. The box price is only the first bill to check. Compare recording subscriptions, required hubs and installation needs. Choose the right placement and power source before being distracted by a bundle full of things you cannot use.

Compare with HBH: Compare Blink and Ring doorbells; Compare Blink cameras; Compare Schlage smart locks.

Vacuums and floor care: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Cordless vacuums, robot cleaners and spot-cleaning machines. A robot, a cordless vacuum and an upholstery cleaner solve different messes. Shop for your floors and furniture, then count the cleanup the machine itself requires. The goal is less work, not a new appliance to parent.

Compare with HBH: Compare Dyson cordless vacuums; Compare Roborock and Roomba robots; Compare Bissell Little Green and Shark StainStriker.

Wi-Fi and home-office accessories: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Mesh routers, keyboards, mice, hubs, webcams and chargers. Fix the problem you can name: dead-zone Wi-Fi, missing ports or a webcam that makes every meeting look haunted. Compare compatibility before buying; a discounted accessory is not useful if your computer cannot use its main feature.

Compare with HBH: Compare eero mesh kits; Compare Logitech keyboards; Compare Brio webcams; Compare Anker wall chargers.

Outdoor gear and backup power: what belongs on the list?

Look for: Portable power stations, camp comforts and yard equipment. Think about what you need to run or carry, and for how long. Check the product’s limits and instructions. The biggest battery or tallest stack of camping boxes is not automatically the best fit for your weekend.

The HBH checkout rule

Ask four questions: Did I want it before today? Is this the exact version? Is the final price good compared with another retailer? Would I still buy it if the countdown disappeared?

If the answers hold up, enjoy your find. If they do not, close the tab. Saving 100% on something you never needed is not a flashy affiliate strategy, but it is excellent shopping.
